Exploration 6

Part 1

In “Shrouded in Contradiction”, the author is an Islamic woman who moved from her hometown in Tehran to live in the United States. When she goes back to visit, she has to wear a hijab, which is a covering that Islamic women must wear. She is annoyed by this fact because it isn’t fair to make women wear all that hot and heavy material, especially when it’s hot outside. Asayesh writes, “fix your scarf at once!” she replies, “but I’m hot” “don’t you think we all are?”(Asayesh 546). This shows how women in the Middle East are treated and it is very poorly.

From my own experience, something that I love and sometime do not love would be going to college. While it is very important to obtain a degree so that I can get a good job, I do not like the hassle of meeting deadlines for papers, going to class, having to be stuck living at home and commuting. It's tiring but I know it will all pay off in the end.

Part 2

My favorite passage from the Dalai Lama's speech is on page 599 and it is "Peace can only last where human rights are respected, where the people are fed, and where individuals and nations are free." This to me speaks a lot because it is saying in a way that we will never have peace because there is always war somewhere, human rights are not being respected by certain cultures, and there will always be a developing 3rd world country somewhere that is poor and disease ridden and cannot feed its people. The 14 Dalai Lama is from Tibet and was recognized as the reincarnation of predecessor, the 13th Dalai Lama. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. He was also sentenced into exile because of his beliefs and like many previous Dalai Lamas, he traveled world-wide to preach his beliefs. http://www.dalailama.com/biography/a-brief-biography

  1. I agree with your statements in part one. It would be very hard to go back to the Middle East and have to wear a Hijab again. My contradiction is also school. I know it will pay off in the end but it is hard to stay positive and motivated.

    1. I also agree with what you have to say about the men not wearing anything but the women have to be uncomfortable in the Hijab. It must have been very hard for the writer to have to do something that she didn't necessarily like all for her religion.

  2. The information posted in part 1 I can definitely relate to. College will pay off but it is a challenge. How does a person decide if it is the right thing for them to be doing? I think this is a challenge for people debating about attending college and even the people that are in college.
The site is very interesting that you provided and I enjoyed reading about this fascinating man.

  3. I agree with you, sometimes I find my self asking what exactly I want to do with my life after college? The answer is the same every time. Travel and visit places that only one can dream of. Thing is, you need money to do that and to have money you need a degree and so on. Sometimes it gets to the the point where i feel like i am forcing myself to go to college...
